Nelson province lies in the top north-western corner of the South Island and has a population of 48,000. This is an area in which visitors are exposed to almost every type of New Zealand's scenery, ranging from snow clad mountains to warm sunny beaches. The surrounding coastline has some of New Zealand's finest beaches and boasts more sunshine all year round than any other part of the country. This makes Nelson a very popular holiday area and a fantastic horticultural area. Apart from beaches and bays, Nelson is known for it's thriving arts and crafts community, and fertile lowlands on which there are orchards, hop gardens, and vineyards. The latter producing some of New Zealand's best boutique wines.
