Shoofly Ruins Trail Comments

Entrance to the Shoofly Village ruins.
Shoofly Village Archaeological Site, an Indian ruins on Houston Mesa Rd. is a partially excavated 87-room site that was occupied between A.D. 1000 and 1250 by peoples related to the Hohokam and Salado cultures.
An additional 50 archaeological sites have been identified in the 2,000 acres of national forest around Payson.

This village has not been restored or re-constructed. Current approaches are to leave the site un-disturbed for future research. This location contains the remains from a building -- probably a residence.

The Shoofly Village Ruins have been ravaged by unskilled individuals hunting for pottery and other artifacts. Here is an example of damage left from illegal scavaging.
